Colouring Inside The (Embroidered) Lines

Some nights the Craft Muse has no mercy at all…

So, I read a cool post from the blog It’s A T-Sweet Day about her Salem Quilt Guild #1 project. It is about her quilt piece that had both embroidery and colouring with crayons on the cloth. I must admit to being entranced. It’s gorgeous and inspiring and I strongly suggest checking the post and blog out!

I couldn’t wait another minute to try it myself 🙂

Not having any crayons (and it being the middle of the night), I decided to improvise with my prismcolour coloured pencils (aka pencil crayons). I don’t know how well this will work because I haven’t tried to heat set the colour yet.

First I found an image that I had stored in my inspiration file. Sadly, I cannot find the name of the artist. Then I sketched it onto muslin, coloured it lightly, and outlined the borders with different outline stitches. I used back stitch, stem stitch, whipped stitch, split stitch, and a little running stitch. At the end I added a bit more colour.

The whole project only took one night and as soon as I see if the colour sets well, I think I will be doing this more often!

So here is the embroidery which I am calling ‘Anemone’. (I wish I could draw as well as the original artist and I am not thrilled about the quality of the embroidery, but for a quick experimental project, it’s not too shabby!)

Happy crafting darlings!

I am a middle-aged mother of three grown-up sons, a thrifty, creative, and dedicated born-again spinster, and I have a serious string addiction. I teach crochet, knitting, bobbin lacemaking, hand-embroidery, weaving, spinning, kumihimo, darning, mending, and how to upcycle clothing. When I'm not doing that I pretty much play with string. All. The. Time. And I have an unholy love of Pinterest.

    1. Hi Amy,
Thank you for your kind words!

I have seen painted canvases too, but somehow I never thought of trying it myself…too focused on string to look at paint I suppose. Or maybe too intimidated by drawing.

It’s not hard though, especially with tracing to transfer pattern. It’s like using a colouring book 😉

Next time I am going to do all the colouring and set the colour FIRST. Colouring around the embroidery is a pain!

That’s my tip of the day.
      🙂

  1. Oh I love that. In my excitement of preparing my studio, I’ve been collecting water colors and am making an open canvas out of an art junktion frame. I can’t wait to get all this quilt work for gifts out of the way and get to the fun stuff.
